Bayern beaten, Porto fall

FC Bayern München fell to BV Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Friday, as their fellow UEFA Champions League hopefuls FC Porto also lost away.

Alexander Frei scored twice and set up the third goal to lead BV Borussia Dortmund to a rousing 3-2 victory over champions FC Bayern München as the Bundesliga restarted on Friday after a six-week winter break.

Tinga winner
The Swiss international put the hosts in front in the 12th minute, nodding a cross from Dede beyond Oliver Kahn to send the home crowd of 80,708 into a frenzy on a freezing night filled with snow flurries. Bayern hit back to take a 2-1 half-time lead through Daniel Van Buyten and Roy Makaay before Frei grabbed a carbon-copy of his opener to equalise in the 57th minute with his eighth goal of the season. A header from Frei created the third for Brazilian international Tinga two minutes later, giving new coach Jürgen Röber a debut victory.

'New start'
"The coach told me my aerial game wasn't good and I wanted to prove to him it was," Frei said. "This is a new start for us. We had a poor first half to the season and were indebted to the fans." Bayern defender Philipp Lahm added: "If we keep playing like today we definitely aren't going to win the championship." Third-placed Bayern (33) are three points behind joint leaders Werder Bremen, who entertain Hannover 96 on Sunday, and FC Schalke 04, who play at Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

Porto beaten
In Portugal, Bayern's fellow UEFA Champions League challengers FC Porto suffered their second league defeat of the season as they had Ricardo Quaresma sent off (45 minutes) in a 1-0 defeat at UD Leiria. Damien Tixier headed the only goal in the 71st minute, although the fourth-placed club rode their luck throughout with Porto hitting the woodwork three times. "It was a fair result," said Porto coach Jesualdo Ferreira. Porto remain top with 40 points from 16 matches, seven clear of Sporting Clube de Portugal who visit Boavista FC on Sunday.
