FC Schalke 04 have announced that Brazilian defender Gustavo will not be joining them this month despite agreeing a contract in December.

Change of heart
The 24-year old defender signed a dealt until June 2009 shortly before Christmas and was expected to leave his current side, Paraná Clube, on a free transfer. However, Schalke have confirmed on their website that the Brazilian will now stay in his home country due to "family commitments" though they have not cancelled his contract.

Explanation
The German club's general manager Andreas Müller said: "We have taken note of this. We have to and we will live with the player's decision, but we have to point out that we have a legally binding contract with Gustavo, which means that he can't play anywhere else. Time will tell what will happen."
