Unsworth weighs in for Wigan

Members

Experienced defender David Unsworth has joined Wigan Athletic FC on a six-month contract from fellow Premiership strugglers Sheffield United FC.

Promotion
The 33-year-old helped Sheffield United to promotion last season after joining in summer 2005, having spent much of his career at Everton FC and also played for West Ham United FC, Portsmouth FC and Ipswich Town FC. Capped once by England in 1995, Unsworth has moved on a free transfer having lost his place in the Blades' starting lineup.

Third signing
Wigan manager Paul Jewell said: "With Steve McMillan injured, we didn't really have any cover for Leighton [Baines] at left-back. David Wright and Emmerson Boyce can play out there if needed, but I really want two players for every position." Jewell, whose team are four points above the relegation zone in only their second top-flight season, has also completed loan deals for Norway midfielder Kristofer Hæstad from IK Start and Sweden defender Andreas Granqvist from Helsingborgs IF.
