Newcastle United FC youngster David Edgar denied Manchester United FC the chance to open up a nine-point lead in the Premiership with a late equaliser.

Manchester United FC failed to take the chance to open up a nine-point advantage at the top of the Premiership after Canadian youngster David Edgar scored a dramatic equaliser to earn Newcastle United FC a 2-2 draw at St James' Park.

United stunned
Edgar, 19, struck 73 minutes into his home debut after Paul Scholes had scored twice, either side of half-time, to seemingly put the visitors on the way to three points after Newcastle had led mid-way through the first-half thanks to a stunning James Milner strike. Chelsea FC now have the chance to close the gap to four points with victory at Aston Villa FC on Tuesday.

Liverpool impress
Liverpool FC moved back into third place after three second half goals gave them an impressive victory against Bolton Wanderers FC at Anfield. Two goals in as many minutes from Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard put the Merseysiders on the way to their tenth victory in twelve home matches in the league this season before Dirk Kuyt sealed the points late on.

Six-goal rout
Elsewhere, struggling West Ham United fell to a 6-0 defeat away to Reading FC. Kevin Doyle was on the scoresheet twice as the East Londoners suffered their worst reverse since Manchester United put the same number of goals past them in January 2003. It was a loss that kept West Ham in 18th, four points from safety. Watford FC remain bottom following a goal-less draw against Fulham FC.

Portsmouth held
Sixth-placed Portsmouth FC were held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham Hotspur FC, Manchester City FC got their second win in three days with a 2-1 win against Everton FC, Middlesbrough FC were 3-1 winners against Sheffield United FC and there were also three points for Blackburn Rovers FC - Mark Hughes' side 3-0 victors away to Wigan Athletic FC.
