AC Sparta Praha have welcomed back Czech international defender Pavel Mareš from FC Zenit St. Petersburg on a contract until June 2009.

Return home
The left-back, who will be 31 next week, left Sparta for Russia four years ago and has played well over 100 league games for Zenit. Capped ten times by the Czech Republic, he is the first new signing for the Czech league leaders in the transfer window, but they will effectively have another addition to their squad after the return to full training of striker Miroslav Slepička, who has been out for nine months with a broken heel.

Volešák comeback
Meanwhile, midfielder Ladislav Volešák has returned to the club from a successful loan at SK Dynamo České Budějovice where the dead-ball specialist scored six goals - a better tally than all but one of the Sparta squad this season. More arrivals are expected at Sparta, although left-back Michal Kadlec and captain Tomáš Sivok could both leave and Swiss forward Mauro Lustrinelli has already returned home to FC Luzern.
