Reading lure 'outstanding' Halford

Members

English Premiership club Reading FC have signed the versatile defender Greg Halford from Colchester United FC for a fee reported to be in excess of €3.5m.

'Outstanding talent'
Halford has been a regular for the second-tier side since establishing himself at Colchester during the 2003/04 season, making 136 appearances. He has agreed a three-and-a-half year contract, with Reading director of football Nick Hammond saying: "He is an outstanding talent - young, hungry and with the ability to become even better."

Three recruits
The 22-year-old is Reading's third signing this week following the arrivals of Irish defender Alan Bennett from Cork City FC and Australian teenager Oliver Bozanic. The 25-year-old Bennett has accepted a contract with the southern team, though no details of the deal have been disclosed. Eighteen-year-old Bozanic has secured terms to keep him at the Madejski Stadium until summer 2009. He previously played for Central Coast Mariners in Australia's A-League.
