Heynckes leaves Mönchengladbach

Members

German strugglers VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach today said goodbye to "an absolute gentleman" after accepting the resignation of coach Jupp Heynckes.

Relegation place
The 61-year-old Heynckes had rejoined Mönchengladbach at the beginning of the campaign on a two-season contract, having previously been coach between 1979 and 1989, but has failed to oversee a victory since the 3-1 home success against VfL Wolfsburg on 14 October. President Rolf Königs said: "We all regret Heynckes' decision very much because we've always had a very friendly and very good working relationship. He is a great person and an absolute gentleman."

Crowning glory
A FIFA World Cup winner as a player with West Germany in 1974, Heynckes' achievements as a coach include claiming two German titles with FC Bayern München and the 1997/98 UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid CF. Prior to returning to Mönchengladbach, who sit third from bottom in the Bundesliga, he had been without a job since being dismissed by FC Schalke 04 in 2004. Heynckes will be replaced by his 43-year-old assistant Jos Luhukay for Saturday's match at DSC Arminia Bielefeld.
