Article body
Nicolás Burdisso was the unlikely goalscoring hero as Italian leaders FC Internazionale Milano won 1-0 against Cagliari Calcio while closest rivals AS Roma lost by the same score at Empoli FC.
European record
Argentina defender Burdisso, who has scored four times in the Copa Italia this season, struck his second league goal of the season in the eleventh-minute at San Siro. It was enough for Inter's 16th straight victory in Serie A, surpassing the top-flight record of Europe's 'big five' leagues held by Real Madrid CF in 1960/61 and FC Bayern München, between 2004/05 and 2005/06, and extended their lead at the top to 14 points.
Roma lose
Elsewhere, surprise package Empoli had a fifth-minute Nicola Pozzi goal to thank for their unexpected victory against Roma. The home side hung on for the three points despite having defender Vittorio Tosto sent off in the closing stages for a second bookable offence. Empoli remain in fourth place, seven points behind US Città di Palermo who welcome AC Chievo Verona tomorrow.
Ronaldo double
On an eventful day, AC Milan had a last-gasp Massimo Ambrosini goal to thank for a 4-3 win at AC Siena that moved them into fifth, two points behind Empoli. The day belonged to Ronaldo, with the Brazil striker opening his account for the Rossoneri before Simone Vergassola equalised. Ricardo Oliveira restored Milan's lead only for Massimo Maccarone to again quickly peg them back. Despite having Cristian Brocchi sent off, Milan took the lead again through Ronaldo inside the last ten minutes. As time ticked away, Maccarone looked to have earned a draw with his second goal of the game but reckoned without Ambrosini's late winner.
