FC Schalke 04's march towards a first Bundesliga title since 1957/58 has been dealt a "tragic" blow after Gustavo Varela was ruled out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury.
Striking concerns
The 28-year-old Uruguayan international ruptured the cruciate ligament in his left knee midway through the second half of Schalke's 2-0 victory against Hertha BSC Berlin on Saturday and faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines. "This is tragic and the season is over for him," team doctor Thorsten Rarreck said. "He needs surgery." Varela has been a key part of Mirko Slomka's side's terrific form this season, playing on the right side of a potent three-man forward line to help the Gelsenkirchen outfit build a six-point lead atop the Bundesliga standings. However, with Søren Larsen also out, Slomka's only available strikers are Kevin Kuranyi, Peter Løvenkrands and Halil Altıntop.
