Rivals profit from Parma problems

Claudio Ranieri's first league game as coach of Parma FC ended in disappointment while AC Chievo Verona and Reggina Calcio both picked up valuable points.

Claudio Ranieri's first league game as coach of Parma FC ended in disappointment as they went down to a 1-0 defeat at home to UC Sampdoria, while relegation rivals AC Chievo Verona and Reggina Calcio both picked up valuable points.

Relegation worries
Fabio Quagliarella hit the only goal of the game for Sampdoria in the 57th minute to leave Ranieri's side one place off the bottom of the table. Ascoli Calcio 1898 remain below Parma after they could only manage a 2-2 draw at home to Udinese Calcio. A point had looked beyond the bottom club after first-half strikes from Vincenzo Iaquinta and Paulo Barreto gave the visitors a two-goal cushion, but Andrea Soncin netted twice after the restart to ensure a share of the points.

Crucial points
FC Messina Peloro remain third bottom after a 2-1 defeat at AS Livorno Calcio. Goals from Stefano Fiore and Cristiano Lucarelli ensured Livorno bounced back from their midweek UEFA Cup defeat by RCD Espanyol while Marco Zoro scored Messina's consolation. Chievo took their draw from another club involved in UEFA Cup action during the week, US Città di Palermo. David Di Michele gave Francesco Guidolin's side the lead after 23 minutes but Chievo levelled on the stroke of half-time thanks to Victor Obinna. Reggina’s point came courtesy of a 1-1 draw at home to Atalanta BC. Nicola Amoruso put the hosts in front on 62 minutes, but an own goal from Maurizio Lanzaro eleven minutes later restored parity.

Pandev double
S.S. Lazio enhanced their claims for a European spot next season by climbing into fourth position with a 2-0 win at home to Torino FC. Goran Pandev scored in each half for Delio Rossi's side. Elsewhere, the prolific Luca Toni hit his sixth goal in as many games with an 87th-minute winner for ACF Fiorentina at Calcio Catania, who had Mauro Minelli sent off just before the hour mark.
