Arsenal FC forward Robin van Persie will not return to action this season as he continues to recover from a broken metatarsal in his right foot.

Hopes dashed
The 23-year-old Dutch international suffered the injury celebrating his equaliser against Manchester United FC on 21 January and has not played since. The Premiership club had hoped he would be available next month, as third-placed Arsenal look to secure a UEFA Champions League berth for 2007/08, but manager Arsène Wenger, whose team visit Liverpool FC on Saturday, has revealed they will have to do without Van Persie.

Safety first
Wenger said: "The end of April now looks optimistic. It is likely he will be out for the season. We have spoken to the doctors and they told us that the longer you keep this kind of fracture without playing, the less chance you have of a recurrence. So if he can play only one or two games then we will not take a gamble." The Netherlands have no more UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifiers until September.
