Relegation fight
Doll has signed a contract until summer 2008 and takes over a club sitting just one point above the relegation zone following a 2-0 defeat at VfL Bochum 1848 on Saturday. The new coach, whose first match in charge will be at home to 1.FC Nürnberg on Saturday, said: "I am looking forward to the challenge and the match against Nürnburg. That's the only thing that counts now. It's an honour for a young coach, to be contacted by such a big club after just a short break."
Hamburg spell
The 40-year-old was previously in charge of Hamburger SV, stepping up from the reserves to take the top job in October 2004. He guided HSV into the UEFA Cup in his first season and last term challenged for the title, earning a spot in the UEFA Champions League. However, Doll was sacked on 1 February with Hamburg in relegation trouble, and his former club remain one of Dortmund's rivals in trying to avoid the drop. Doll's former assistant, Ralf Zumdick, has followed him to Dortmund.
