Olympique Lyonnais were held to a goalless draw away to mid-table AJ Auxerre on Sunday but it did not take the gloss off a fine weekend which saw Gérard Houllier's men crowned Ligue 1 champions for a sixth year in a row.
New target
Lyon claimed the title without playing on Saturday, Toulouse FC's 3-2 defeat by Stade Rennais FC giving them an unassailable lead atop the standings. No team has ever won the title with five games still to play, but Lyon are eager to add another record before the end of the campaign. They have now set sights on surpassing their own record of 84 for the campaign, secured in 2005/06 though the result at Auxerre – their fifth draw in eight league outings – means they must now win each of their remaining five games.
Bordeaux rise
In the day's late game, FC Girondins de Bordeaux boosted their hopes of a return to the UEFA Champions League with a 2-0 win at AS Saint-Etienne after second-half goals from Fernando Menegazzo and 18-year-old Gabriel Obertan. The victory lifted the club to third in Ligue 1, above Toulouse FC on goal difference and just a point behind second-placed RC Lens. Bordeaux welcome Lens for a crunch encounter next Sunday that could go a long way to deciding who finishes runners-up behind all-conquering Lyon.
