United suffer title setback

Members

The race for the Premiership title was thrown wide open on Saturday after Manchester United FC were held to a 1-1 home draw by Middlesbrough FC.

Viduka leveller
The league leaders looked set to restore their six-point lead over Chelsea FC when they took a second-minute lead against Middlesbrough. Paul Scholes put Wayne Rooney through on goal with a long ball and the England international rounded Mark Schwarzer before leaving Kieran Richardson to finish. However, Middlesbrough equalised on the stroke of half-time when Mark Viduka headed in Stewart Downing's cross and boosted Chelsea FC's prospects of catching United. José Mourinho's side can move to within a point of the summit with a win against Newcastle United FC on Sunday.

Jenas leveller
Arsenal FC had hoped to put a tumultuous week off the field behind them by winning at their north London rivals, Tottenham Hotspur FC, and were on course to do so after Kolo Touré (63) and Emmanuel Adebayor (77) had cancelled out Robbie Keane's tenth-minute opener for Spurs. Jermaine Jenas had the final say four minutes into stoppage time, though, by beating Jens Lehmann with a strike from range.

Reading climb
Arsenal have 63 points, four fewer than Liverpool with three rounds of the Premiership to play after Dirk Kuyt scored in the 29th and 67th minutes to boost confidence at Anfield ahead of the UEFA Champions League semi-final trip to Chelsea on Wednesday. Three late goals helped Reading FC to a 3-1 win at Bolton Wanderers FC and into a UEFA Cup qualifying spot ahead of eighth-placed Spurs. The Royals are also within three points of fifth-placed Everton, who fell to a Bobby Zamora goal at West Ham United FC, and Bolton.

Watford relegated
West Ham stay second from bottom on 32 points, but closed in on the other teams battling to stay in the Premiership as Charlton Athletic FC (33 points) drew 1-1 at home to Sheffield United FC (35). Wigan also have 35 points, while Fulham FC moved on to 36 with a 1-1 home draw against Blackburn Rovers FC. Watford FC are the only club to be relegated so far, a 1-1 home draw against Manchester City FC sending them straight back to the Championship.
