Karlsruher SC will return to the Bundesliga after a nine-year absence next season after winning promotion under coach Edmund Becker on Sunday.

Lean years
Having remained in the promotion places throughout the season, top spot in the second tier became a certainty for Karlsruhe as they won 1-0 against SpVgg Unterhaching. UEFA Cup semi-finalists in 1993/94, relegation from the Bundesliga in 1998 prompted some lean years for the south-western club, who dropped down to German football's third level in 2000. They have barely put a foot wrong this season, and are eleven points clear of FC Hansa Rostock with three games to go - having won 20 of their 31 league games. "It is simply unbelievable what this team has done," said general manager Rolf Dohmen. "It will take a few days for it to sink in."
