Basel make Luzern pay penalty

A last-gasp penalty from Daniel Majstorovic proved enough for FC Basel 1893 to lift the Swiss Cup as they claimed a 1-0 victory against FC Luzern in Berne.

A last-gasp penalty by Daniel Majstorovic proved enough for FC Basel 1893 to win the Swiss Cup as they claimed a 1-0 victory over FC Luzern in front of a 30,000 sell-out crowd at the Stade de Suisse in Berne.

Show of nerve
Majstorovic scored from the spot three minutes into added time, keeping his nerve under the greatest of pressure on the artificial pitch. Any locals watching would have been pleased with the outcome as it meant BSC Young Boys earned the third and last Swiss UEFA Cup spot despite finishing fourth, Basel having already qualified for Europe as Super League runners-up.

Last kick
The decisive moment came with extra time looming as the dangerous Scott Chipperfield was released by Mladen Petrić and the Australian international was brought down by Luzern keeper David Zibung, who was red-carded for the foul. Majstorovic made no mistake, scoring into the bottom left corner. Female referee Nicole Petignat blew the final whistle seconds later and the result left Basel celebrating only days after missing out on the championship following a tight race with FC Zürich. While Zürich go into UEFA Champions League qualifying, Basel, FC Sion and Young Boys enter the UEFA Cup equivalent.
