Former Polish international Marek Citko has announced his retirement at the age of 33 having agreed to terminate his contract with second division side KSP Polonia Warszawa a year early by mutual consent.

Widzew success
The attacking midfielder was considered Poland's best player in the mid-1990s, although a succession of injuries prevented him from fulfilling his potential and winning more than his ten international caps. Citko, who was voted Poland's Sportsman of the Year in 1996, made his name at RTS Widzew Lódz, with whom he won two Polish titles and played in the UEFA Champions League group stage in 1996/97 before spells with a number of clubs at home and abroad, including Hapoel Beer-Sheva FC in Israel and Swiss sides FC Aarau and FC Yverdon-Sports as well as Legia Warszawa and Groclin Grodzisk Wielkopolski, among others, in Poland.

Offers turned down
"I have decided to put an end to my football career," said Citko. "If Polonia had won promotion to the top flight, I would have continued playing but I want to enjoy football, not become exhausted with it. I had offers from abroad and from Ekstraklasa clubs but I wanted to remain in Warsaw. My family has had enough travelling."
