The centre-back, 25, was out of contract at Bolton and moves to west London on a four-year deal. His arrival means Chelsea have acquired three players for no fee this summer, with FC Bayern München forward Claudio Pizarro and Reading FC midfielder Steve Sidwell the other newcomers. Chelsea had tried to sign the former Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC man, who made 88 Premier League appearances in three seasons with Bolton, for €3m in January. José Mourinho's men subsequently won both the FA Cup and English League Cup, but finished second behind Manchester United FC in the title race.
