Coaching promise
Despite their runaway title success, Matthäus parted company with the Austrian champions for what the club termed "philosophical differences". Salzburg have filled his role as assistant to head coach Giovanni Trapattoni by appointing Fink, who won the UEFA Champions League with Bayern in 2000/01. The 39-year-old has shown signs of promise on the bench, guiding Salzburg's reserves to the Austrian third division title. "Even though I don't really like leaving my successful young side, I am looking forward to the interesting task of working alongside Giovanni Trapattoni," said Fink.
