Article body
Newcastle United FC have completed the signing of midfielder Joey Barton for a fee of €8.5m from Manchester City FC after the England international agreed a five-year contract with the north-east club.
England experience
The 24-year-old, who won his only England cap to date as a substitute in a friendly against Spain in February, sealed the protracted move six days after Newcastle's bid was accepted by their Premier League rivals. Liverpool-born Barton leaves Manchester City after five seasons in the first team, in which time he made 130 league appearances, scoring 15 goals. The committed midfielder becomes new Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce's second recruit following the capture of Australian international striker Mark Viduka last week. Newcastle also sold Scott Parker to West Ham United FC in a €10.3m deal as they prepare for next season.
