José Enrique joins Newcastle

Newcastle United FC have followed the capture of Claudio Caçapa with the signing of Spanish U21 international full-back José Enrique from Villarreal CF.

Newcastle United FC have signed Spanish Under-21 international left-back José Enrique in a €9.3m transfer from Villarreal CF.

Prospect
The defender has moved to England's Premier League on a five-year contract, having caught the eye with Villarreal last season. "I would like to thank Newcastle United for showing faith in me and giving me this chance," said the 21-year-old. José Enrique made 23 Primera División appearances in 2006/07, his first senior campaign at El Madrigal. He had spent the previous season on loan at RC Celta de Vigo.

Caçapa capture
José Enrique is Newcastle's second defensive recruit of the week following the arrival of Claudio Caçapa on a free transfer from Olympique Lyonnais. The 31-year-old Brazilian centre-back has agreed an initial two-year deal with the north-east team. He played 125 Ligue 1 games for Lyon, winning six French championships. Newcastle have also signed Alan Smith, Mark Viduka, Joey Barton, Geremi and David Rozehnal this summer.
