Five-year deal
Smith, 26, moves to Newcastle on a five-year contract and will link up with former Leeds United AFC team-mates Mark Viduka and James Milner at St James' Park. The north-east club are also close to completing the free-transfer signing of Olympique Lyonnais' Brazilian central defender Claudio Caçapa, 31.
Leeds exploits
Forward Smith made 61 Premier League appearances for United, scoring seven goals, after joining from Leeds in the summer of 2004. Part of the Leeds team that reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals in 2000/01, he has 17 England caps and a championship medal from his last campaign at Old Trafford.
