Edwin van der Sar was the hero as Manchester United FC warmed-up for the new season by lifting the FA Community Shield against Chelsea FC at Wembley Stadium, reversing the result from May's FA Cup final with victory on penalties after the game had ended 1-1.
Giggs opener
After a quiet start to the traditional curtain-raiser to the new English season Ryan Giggs had the first serious effort of the game on 20 minutes when his far-post shot was well pushed behind for a corner by Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Čech. However the Czech Republic international was helpless 15 minutes later as Giggs, making his 15th appearance at Wembley in a Manchester United shirt, turned in Patrice Evra's cutback.
Penalty drama
Chelsea, missing John Terry, Didier Drogba and Claude Makelele through injury, managed to get back on level terms just before half-time as summer signing from Olympique Lyonnais Florent Malouda latched onto a long ball before shrugging off Rio Ferdinand and flicking the ball with the outside of his left foot past Van der Sar. After no further scoring in the second half the Dutchman would be the pivotal figure as the game was decided on penalties, saving from Claudio Pizarro, Frank Lampard and Shaun Wright-Phillips as Manchester United won 3-0. The Premier League begins next weekend with United hosting Reading FC and Chelsea taking on Birmingham City FC.
