Swedish title there for the taking

Djurgårdens IF top the Swedish table but coach Sigurdur 'Siggi' Jónsson feels that "any team which goes on a run now" can take the Allsvenskan title.

Nominal favourites
At the start of the season, reigning champions IF Elfsborg were the nominal favourites to take the 2007 crown, but there was a fair degree of disagreement among experts. Many felt the title race would be too close to call, and after 17 games, that is still the case with Djurgården just about holding the whip-hand.

Djurgården stable
Three points clear at the top of the table, they have managed to keep their squad just about together through the summer, barring right-back Matias Concha's move to German side VfL Wolfsburg, and Icelandic coach Jónsson remains on target to take the title in his first season in charge of the Stockholm club.

Cagey statement
However, the 40-year-old former Sheffield Wednesday FC and Arsenal FC player is not banking much on his side's current form, and feels that any number of sides could still take the tape. "It's a very interesting season and any team that goes on a run now will probably clinch it, but it's hard to tell which team that could be," he said.

Close contest
Jónsson is wise to be cagey with IFK Göteborg, Elfsborg, Halmstads BK and Kalmar FF all still in the running. Göteborg drew 1-1 at home against the league leaders on Thursday night to keep their title credentials afloat, although many feel that selling goalscoring hero Marcus Berg to FC Groningen has fatally undermined their challenge.

Halmstads hopes
Having bolstered their squad in order to compete in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers, third-placed Elfsborg have received a useful mid-season boost, while Halmstads - level on points with the champions - boast a fine goalkeeper in Finn Magnus Bahne and a revitalised Dusan Djuric, but have sold forward Emra Tahirovic to LOSC Lille Métropole.

Kalmar sag
In fifth place, Kalmar cannot quite be ruled out yet. Having put in some solid performances in the early part of the season, they worked their way into contention, although a grim run of league results - culminating in a 5-0 drubbing against Göteborg last weekend - has taken some of the wind out of their sails.
