FC Bayern München retained their 100 per cent record to return to the top of the Bundesliga with a 3-0 win at home to Hannover 96 while DSC Arminia Bielefeld moved into second spot with a 2-0 success against Hertha BSC Berlin.
Signings score
The summer signings again came to the fore for Bayern with Luca Toni striking on 28 minutes win and Altin Lala not helping Hannover's cause by getting sent off before half-time. The hosts took full advantage of the extra man with Mark van Bommel and Hamit Altıntop completing the scoring.
Wichniarek streak
Arminia were rewarded for their patience with two second-half goals which moved them two points from the summit. Ioannis Masmanidis made the breakthrough in the 52nd minute and Polish international Artur Wichniarek scored his third goal in as many games to end Hertha's hopes in added time.
First victories
UEFA Champions League hopefuls VfB Stuttgart and Werder Bremen both earned their first league wins of the season at the third time of asking. Champions Stuttgart had striker Mario Gomez to thank for their three points at home to MSV Duisburg, while a single goal was also enough for Bremen at 1. FC Nürnberg with Martin Harnik the man on target. Bremen travel to NK Dinamo Zagrab on Wednesday looking to hold on to their 2-1 advantage from the first leg and earn a place in the UEFA Champions League group stage.
Welcome wins
Elsewhere, there were welcome wins for BV Borussia Dortmund and UEFA Cup hopefuls Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Dortmund, who were defeated in their opening two league fixtures, were 3-0 home winners against FC Energie Cottbus with Florian Kringe opening the scoring before a second-half double from Diego Klimovicz wrapped up the points. Leverkusen won by the same scoreline against Karlsruher SC with an own goal by Maik Franz, Manuel Friedrich and Theofanis Gekas putting them in control before half-time.
