Torres quality too much for Reading

Fernando Torres scored his first hat-trick for Liverpool FC as he helped them through to the fourth round of the English League Cup where they were joined by Premier League leaders Arsenal FC.

Liverpool got the better of Reading FC in a topsy-turvy tie, eventually running out 4-2 winners. The Merseysiders, who play Olympique de Marseille in their second UEFA Champions League game next week, took the lead through a fine Yossi Benayoun solo effort on 23 minutes before Bobby Convey volleyed an equaliser five minutes later. The second half was all about Torres though, and despite John Halls pulling Reading back level following the Spaniard's first goal, he would claim the match ball with further strikes on 71 and 86 minutes to take his tally in a Liverpool shirt to six goals in eight appearances in all competitions.

Arsenal through
Last season's runners-up, Arsenal, also went safely through against Newcastle United FC. Coach Arsène Wenger named a much-changed lineup from the 5-0 weekend win against Derby County FC but it did not have an adverse effect as they ran out 2-0 winners at home thanks to late goals by Nicklas Bendtner and Denilson. Portsmouth FC and Manchester City FC were also winners, against Burnley FC and Norwich City FC respectively. Holders Chelsea FC are in action on Wednesday away against second-tier Hull City AFC in what will be new coach Avraham Grant's second game in charge.
