FH Hafnarfjördur made up for missing out on the Urvalsdeild title by winning the Icelandic Cup final 2-1 after extra time against second-tier Fjölnir.

FH Hafnarfjördur made up for their disappointment of missing out on the Urvalsdeild title by winning the Icelandic Cup on Saturday with a 2-1 win after extra time against Fjölnir.

Title agony
FH, who finished just a point behind Valur Reykjavík in the league, were forced to play the additional 30 minutes in the showpiece fixture by second-tier side Fjölnir before prevailing. Matthías Gudmundsson (17) opened the scoring for FH before Gunnar Már Gudmundsson's penalty on 86 minutes, awarded after Tommy Nielsen fouled Davíd Thór Rúnarsson, took the match into extra time.

Gudmundsson winner
Fjölnir were missing two of the players who had been integral parts in their march to the final with Atli Vidar Björnsson and Heimir Snær Gudmundsson, both on loan from FH, unable to play against the side that own their registration. They were eventually undone when Gudmundsson scored his and FH's second after 105 minutes, following a fine pass from Tryggvi Gudmundsson, to clinch the trophy.

Fjölnir promotion
Despite the disappointment it has been an excellent season for Fjölnir, having already secured promotion to the top flight. They ended the campaign third in their league - the final promotion place - enabling them to compete in next season's new look 12-team Icelandic top-flight after a decision was reached to extend the Urvalsdeild from its current ten-club limit. FH, meanwhile, go into the qualifying rounds for next season's UEFA Cup.
