Newcastle United FC kept in touch with the upper reaches of the English Premier League with a 3-1 victory against surprise strugglers Tottenham Hotspur FC in the Monday night match.

Černý beaten
The home side had the better of the first half and went ahead just before the break when José Enrique’s long ball was picked up by Obafemi Martins, who went past Michael Dawson and shot past Tottenham goalkeeper Radek Černý. Making his first league appearance since May 2005 in place of the injured Paul Robinson, the Czech custodian was beaten again not long after the interval when Claudio Caçapa headed in Emre Belözoğlu's corner.

Milner clincher
Robbie Keane soon pulled one back as he tapped in the rebound after a Darren Bent flick-on hit the post from a Pascal Chimbonda cross, but with 18 minutes left Newcastle substitute James Milner put the result beyond doubt when he gave Černý no chance with a looping volley from the edge of the box. Newcastle remain eighth and are only two points off the top four, while Tottenham stay in the relegation zone three days ahead of their UEFA Cup group stage opener at home to Getafe CF.
