Former Manchester United FC forward John Doherty, one of the famous 'Busby Babes' of the mid-1950s, has died at the age of 72.

Short career
Doherty scored seven goals in 26 appearances for United, helping them to win the 1955/56 English league title before a chronic knee injury hastened his departure from the club and retirement at the age of 23. He subsequently became chairman of the Association of Former Manchester United Players. United chief executive David Gill said: "John was a tireless leader of the association and a much loved and popular figure around Old Trafford." Former team-mate Paddy Crerand added: "I am absolutely devastated. It's hard to take. He was a great, great lad and such a big fan of United."
