German Cup holders 1. FC Nürnberg bowed out of the competition in the second round on penalties at second division strugglers FC Carl Zeiss Jena – but FC Bayern München suffered no such upset.
Holders out
Nürnberg led through Zvjezdan Misimović on 13 minutes yet Sándor Torghelle equalised early in the second half before being sent off. Joshua Kennedy restored the visitors' advantage in extra time, before Robert Müller forced a shoot-out and Dominik Reinhardt missed the decisive spot-kick as the hosts won 5-4.
Bayern through
Bayern defeated 2. Bundesliga leaders VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 as Luca Toni scored twice early in the second half. Although Marcel Djeng pulled one back from long range for the visitors, Miroslav Klose – on for the Italian – settled matters late on. Title-holders VfB Stuttgart, meanwhile, needed two Thomas Hitzlsperger goals in the 90 minutes and a Mario Gómez strike just before the end of extra time to overcome second-tier SC Paderborn 07 by 3-2. DSC Arminia Bielefeld also required an additional half-hour to prevail 2-1 at TuS Koblenz.
Bremen cruise
In the all top-flight ties, BV Borussia Dortmund came from behind to defeat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 and Werder Bremen thrashed MSV Duisburg 4-0. Hamburger SV eliminated SC Freiburg 3-1 while SC Rot-Weiss Essen, now playing in the Regionalliga Nord, pulled off a minor surprise with a 2-1 success against second division 1. FC Kaiserslautern.
