Article body
The Azerbaijan title is always keenly fought and this season a new contender, FK Olimpik Baku, has emerged, moving five points clear of defending champions FK Khazar Lenkoran.
Undefeated leaders
Founded in 1996 by Kamil Mamedov as FK AMMK Baku, the club were a futsal side until 2005. They won promotion to the elité division in their first season, changing their name as they advanced. But it was only when Asker Abdullayev took over before the start of the 2006 campaign that the club truly flourished.
Qualifying success
Abdullayev, one of the most respected local coaches, had been in charge of all Azerbaijan national teams in two spells, during which they produced their best results - a UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying draw and victory against Serbia and Montenegro. Abdullayev believes he has the recipe for Olimpik's success, saying: "Our capabilities do not allow us to buy the most sought after players so team play is essential. Today, football is more demanding and the pace is ever increasing. We put an emphasis on speed-based football - not the pace of the players when they run, but the quickness of thought. Whoever makes decisions the quicker wins."
Quality successor
The forward-thinking Olimpik coach is already grooming his successor, former Azerbaijan international Tarlan Akhmedov. "I think he will develop into a very good coach," said Abdullayev. "He has all the qualities because he always played very smart football. He already helps me in training and his day will come. I will be happy to have taken part in his progress as it will benefit our football."
Nurtured talent
Many of their current stars have come through Abdullayev's school at FC Shafa, while seven players he nurtured in the Under-21 side between 2000 and 2002 are now part of the national team. Last season's building of his Olimpik side had led to a title challenge this term, with the hosting of the champions scheduled for 25 November key to their hopes.
Club stability
The capital club have looked for sustainable development to guarantee long-term stability. "We don't promise players mountains of gold, but we keep all our promises and honour every contract," said president Rasul Rasulov. "Wages and prize money are always paid on time. Maybe our place at the top is surprising for some, but not for those who work for the club. Our club is a coherent team and I am sure our results will keep improving."
