The FAI Cup holders Cork City FC have appointed former Longford Town FC boss Alan Mathews as their new manager, replacing Damien Richardson.

Cork City FC have named former Longford Town FC boss Alan Mathews as their new manager.

Trading places
The 42-year-old replaces Damien Richardson who had been in the Cork dugout when they beat Mathews's Longford Town side in the FAI Cup final in December. The new man has signed a three-year contract with Cork, having ended his six-season reign at Longford only five weeks ago.

'Honour'
"I consider it a great honour to have the opportunity to manage the club," said Mathews, whose three trophy wins made him Longford's most successful manager. Richardson left the Cork helm on 21 December, having led the team to the 2005 Premier Division title as well as to last season's cup triumph. Cork, as FAI Cup holders, will enter the 2008/09 UEFA Cup.
