CS Sedan-Ardennes may reside in Ligue 2 but they showed their French Cup pedigree by eliminating top-flight SM Caen on a day of Round of 64 action which brought victories for UEFA Cup hopefuls Olympique de Marseille and FC Girondins de Bordeaux against lower-league opposition.

Caen humbled
Winners in 1956 and 1961, Sedan progressed thanks to strikes from Alexandre Bonnet, Moussa Sow and a Djamel Abdoun penalty. Lilian Compan and Yoan Gouffran - after Reynald Lemaître had been sent off in the 89th minute - replied for the visitors, who are fourth in Ligue 1. Goals from Lorik Cana and Djibril Cissé helped Marseille to a 2-0 victory against third-tier AS Beauvais Oise, while Bordeaux came from behind to overcome lowly US Quevilly 3-1.

Excellent start
New FC Metz coach Yvon Pouliquen enjoyed a dream start as the strugglers thrashed neighbours Vesoul Haute-Saône 6-1. In the two all-Ligue 1 ties, FC Lorient overcame Valenciennes FC 2-1 at home thanks to a double from Fabrice Abriel, while AJ Auxerre needed extra time to see off AS Saint-Etienne 3-2. Also requiring an additional 30 minutes were OGC Nice to see off Ligue 2 Le Havre AC 1-0, and Le Mans UC 72 who beat amateurs Selongey SC 3-2.

Penalty scare
RC Strasbourg were pushed even harder at fourth tier FC Rouen. Goalless after 120 minutes, the top-flight side went through 5-4 on penalties. AS Nancy-Lorraine also advanced as they overcame ten-man Stade de Reims Champagne 2-1. The holders FC Sochaux-Montbéliard travel to minnows US Maubeuge in one of the picks of Sunday's ties, another is UEFA Champions League contenders Olympique Lyonnais visiting US Créteil.
