FC Girondins de Bordeaux moved to within three points of Ligue 1 leaders Olympique Lyonnais thanks to a fourth successive victory, 1-0 at home to AS Saint-Etienne.

Cavenaghi the difference
Laurent Blanc's Bordeaux were able to keep up the pressure on title-holders Lyon after striker Fernando Cavenaghi took advantage of poor defending from the visitors to score the only goal on 56 minutes. Until then the hosts, Lyon's closest challengers, had struggled to impose themselves on a St-Etienne side stuck in mid-table. Having extended their unbeaten run to seven league games, Bordeaux now visit FC Lorient on Sunday, when St-Etienne provide the opposition for Lyon in a derby match. Bordeaux have a five-point advantage over AS Nancy-Lorraine in third place.
