'Super Sunday' proved to be no disappointment in Germany with a dramatic draw between the Bundesliga's top two and a crucial derby win for FC Schalke 04.
Wonderful entertainment
Honours were even in the Bavarian capital as league leaders FC Bayern München came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against second-placed Werder Bremen, with Diego's early opener being cancelled out by Zé Roberto – but only after Luca Toni had seen his penalty saved by Bremen's Tim Wiese. "It was a wonderful and entertaining football match," said Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness.
Schaaf satisfied
"Bremen surprised us - they went on the attack right from the kick-off," said Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn. Team-mate Mark van Bommel added: "The first 15 minutes were Bremen's. We struggled to find our game but then we were clearly the better side." Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf concluded: "We can be satisfied because we stuck to our guns. We kept trying to force our style of play on to the game and moved forward determinedly."
Doll doldrums
In Dortmund, Schalke were pegged back twice by BV Borussia Dortmund in the Ruhr derby before the dismissal of Dedé allowed the visitors to edge in front for a third and final time through Fabian Ernst. "We had a decent start but it was evident why we have already conceded 36 goals this season," said Dortmund coach Thomas Doll. "It is impossible to score as many as we concede in every match."
'An incredible game'
The win lifted Schalke to third in the table, within two points of Bremen and five of Bayern. Georgian midfielder Levan Kobiashvili said: "This was an incredible game for the spectators. Yellow cards, a red card, beautiful goals - a real derby." The impressive Gerald Asamoah, who scored Schalke's first and set up their winner, added: "Our goal has to be third place. We have to work hard to do that, but last season, no one expected [VfB] Stuttgart to snatch the title. Maybe we can still do the same thing."
