Barnsley FC caused the upset of the season in the FA Cup with a 2-1 fifth-round victory away to Liverpool FC while Manchester United FC brushed past Arsenal FC.

Second-division side Barnsley FC caused the upset of the season in the FA Cup with a 2-1 fifth-round victory at Liverpool FC while Manchester United FC thrashed Arsenal FC in the evening kick-off.

Howard the hero
There was no hint of danger to come when Dirk Kuyt gave Rafael Benítez's team a half-time advantage at Anfield. But unanswered goals after the break from Stephen Foster and Brian Howard – the latter striking in stoppage time – gave the Yorkshire club a famous win and a place in the quarter-finals.

United stroll
Manchester United also advanced in the game of the day at Old Trafford, brushing aside Premier League leaders Arsenal 4-0. The hosts, who trail the Gunners by five points in the title race, sped into a two-goal lead inside 20 minutes as Wayne Rooney and Darren Fletcher scored. United struck again seven minutes before half-time as Nani fired past Jens Lehmann, and any chance of an Arsenal recovery disappeared three minutes after it when Emmanuel Eboué was dismissed for a challenge on Patrice Evra. Nani turned provider 16 minutes from time, crossing for Fletcher to head his second.

Holders through
At Stamford Bridge, meanwhile, two Frank Lampard goals helped holders Chelsea FC reach the quarter-finals at the expense of Huddersfield Town AFC. Lampard's early effort was cancelled out in first-half added time by Michael Collins, only for Lampard and Salomon Kalou to score within ten minutes of each other midway through the second period.

Another giant-killing
Nor were Barnsley the only side celebrating the scalp of a higher-division team: third-tier outfit Bristol Rovers FC overcame Southampton FC 1-0 thanks to a late Ricky Lambert goal. In the day's other ties, West Bromwich Albion FC enjoyed a 5-0 triumph away to Coventry City FC, while Cardiff City FC won 2-0 against visiting Wolverhampton Wanderers FC.
