Article body
Portsmouth FC edged into the FA Cup quarter-finals with a dramatic 1-0 win at Preston North End FC but another Premier League side, Middlesbrough FC, face a fifth-round replay after being held 0-0 at Sheffield United FC.
Heartbreak
Preston, like Sheffield United from England's second tier Championship, had the better of their fifth-round tie and were awarded a 59th-minute penalty when Sylvain Distin brought down Billy Jones only for Simon Whaley's spot-kick to be saved by England goalkeeper David James. The home team still had the better of the chances but deep into injury time were unable to clear after a corner and Darren Carter turned the ball into his own net.
Middlesbrough held
Sheffield United, who this week replaced former Middlesbrough manager Bryan Robson with Kevin Blackwell, had their chances at Bramall Lane, most notably when James Beattie hit the post at the end of the first half. But Middlesbrough also threatened, Mido forcing a Paddy Kenny save with a looping overhead kick. Their replay, on 26 or 27 February, is the only one that has been required in either the fourth or fifth round. Already through along with Portsmouth are only two Premier League sides; holders Chelsea FC and last season's beaten finalists Manchester United FC, who defeated Arsenal FC on Saturday. Lower-level teams still involved are Barnsley FC, 2-1 victors at Liverpool FC, Cardiff City FC, West Bromwich Albion FC and third division Bristol Rovers FC.
