Ribéry returns
Both goals came in the second half, although Lucio will doubtless want to forget his role in Hamburg's opener on the hour as the defender tried to walk the ball out of defence only to lose control. David Jarolím nipped in and slipped a pass across to Hamburg's Croatia striker Ivica Olić, who comfortably beat Oliver Kahn. Ottmar Hitzfeld sent on fit-again Franck Ribéry, and the Frenchman played a part in the equaliser six minutes later – cutting the ball back for Zé Roberto to finish simply.
Hitzfeld annoyed
"It's really annoying to drop two points," Hitzfeld said. "We had Hamburg completely under control." General manager Uli Hoeness was more forthright, saying: "We've thrown away a chance to gain a real edge on Bremen. The team obviously have problems coping with this kind of pressure." To cap a frustrating afternoon, the Bavarians had Mark van Bommel sent off in added time. The result keeps Bayern top on 44 points from 21 matches, followed by Werder on 40 and Bayer 04 Leverkusen on 38 after their 1-0 home win against FC Schalke 04 on Saturday.
Bremen beaten
Bremen had Brazilian Diego, back from a groin injury after missing Thursday's success against SC Braga, red-carded after 40 minutes and Frankfurt took advantage with a goal from Greece forward Ioannis Amanatidis eleven minutes after the break. "We just couldn't take our chances," said Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf. "We had a lot of good opportunities despite losing a man and we kept on trying."
Wonder goal
Leverkusen, like Werder playing their second game in less than 48 hours, showed no signs of post-UEFA Cup fatigue as they overcame ten-man Schalke with a wonder goal from Manuel Friedrich five minutes from time. Friedrich took the ball infield and swept a shot over Manuel Neuer and just under the crossbar from at least 35 metres. "We gave it everything we had, fought hard and thoroughly deserved the three points," said home coach Michael Skibbe.
Derby joy
VfB Stuttgart are up to eighth, a point behind Frankfurt and two adrift of Karlsruher SC, after beating visitors KSC 3-1 in the Baden-Wurttemberg derby. Mario Gómez, Roberto Hilbert and Cacau were on target for the champions. At the other end, 1. FC Nürnberg and FC Energie Cottbus remain in the relegation zone after drawing 1-1, while MSV Duisburg are sandwiched between them despite winning 2-0 at DSC Arminia Bielefeld, who are just a point clear of the bottom three.
Auer winner
Elsewhere, VfL Wolfsburg-Hertha BSC Berlin was goalless, BV Borussia Dortmund saw off FC Hansa Rostock 1-0, and VfL Bochum 1848 edged past Hannover 96 with Benjamin Auer's header settling Friday's fixture.
