Rangers FC moved six points clear of Celtic FC in the Scottish Premier League title race after beating their Glasgow rivals 1-0 at Ibrox in a Saturday lunch-time kick-off.
Substantial lead
Midfielder Kevin Thomson was the match-winner in the second Old Firm derby of the season, scoring in the 44th minute. Walter Smith's men, who had also prevailed in the teams' first meeting, now have a substantial lead over the title-holders and a game in hand. However, Rangers must negotiate two more derbies, both at Celtic Park, before they can finally end the challenge of Gordon Strachan's side. For the goal, Thomson played a one-two with Jean-Claude Darcheville before tucking the ball under goalkeeper Artur Boruc. Celtic went closest through full-back Andreas Hinkel who forced a fine save from Allan McGregor. Rangers' next test is in the UEFA Cup quarter-finals with Thursday's first-leg visit of Sporting Clube de Portugal.
