Rednic relinquishes control at Rapid

Members

Mircea Rednic has resigned from his fourth spell as coach of Romanian Cup holders FC Rapid Bucureşti following the 1-0 defeat by FC Gloria Buzău yesterday.

Fourth spell
The 45-year-old only returned to the club for a fourth time in October after stepping down at Rapid's city rivals FC Dinamo 1948 Bucureşti, having guided them to the Liga 1 title last season. But during a disappointing campaign in which Rapid have been knocked out of the Romanian Cup at the quarter-final stage – they had won the competition for the last two seasons – and slipped eleven points behind leaders CFR 1907 Cluj, Rednic decided to quit after criticism from the club's supporters.

Derby lure
"I should have done it some weeks ago, but I wanted to beat [FC] Steaua Bucureşti," he said, though the game was called off after 73 minutes with Rapid leading 1-0 after a crowd disturbance. "Even though the match was abandoned, I should have gone immediately afterwards. But three days later there was the match at Buzău and I could not leave the team." The Romanian Football Federation will meet on Wednesday to decide on the outcome, which could see Rapid move up a place from fourth. No replacement for Rednic has yet been announced.
