Spiderman wants a trophy for Catania

Members

Having landed top honours in Romania and Serbia, new coach Walter Zenga is bidding for a first Coppa Italia win as Calcio Catania play AS Roma in the semis.

Contrasting fortunes
Zenga's Calcio Catania visit holders AS Roma in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-finals tonight, making their debut in the last four having eliminated AC Milan and Udinese Calcio in previous rounds under coach Silvio Baldini. The 47-year-old Zenga took over at the relegation-threatened club only two weeks ago but immediately led Catania to an important 3-0 win against SSC Napoli before a 1-0 defeat at Sicilian neighbours US Città Palermo on Saturday left the Etnei 15th in Serie A, just two points above the drop zone.

No distraction
Despite their league travails, Zenga does not see the knockout competition as a distraction. "If you are not eager to play a Coppa Italia semi-final, what is the point of playing football?" the former Italy goalkeeper said. "Any team would like to be in our place. As coaches we live for these kind of games." Nicknamed 'Uomo Ragno' – Spiderman – during a career in which he won a Scudetto and a UEFA Cup with FC Internazionale Milano, Zenga was capped 58 times and kept five straight clean sheets at the 1990 FIFA World Cup. He has returned to Italy after coaching experiences in not only Romania and Serbia but also Turkey and the United Arab Emirates.

'Great moment'

It was with Crvena Zvezda that he gained experience of defeating Roma, earning a 3-1 home win in the UEFA Cup group stage in December 2005. "I was coaching another team and this Roma is different to that one so it's impossible to make any comparison with that game," Zenga said. "It will be an important and prestigious game and we will give everything we have, knowing that we are facing an extraordinary team. A Coppa Italia final would be a great moment for the whole town. None of the four teams left in the competition are taking the competition lightly. It will be a splendid game." The other semi-finalists, FC Internazionale Milano and S.S. Lazio, also play their first leg on Wednesday while Juventus will aim to take another step towards a UEFA Champions League return when they meet Parma FC in a postponed Serie A fixture.
