Wisla Kraków have been crowned Polish champions for the eleventh time, claiming the title for the first time since 2005 without even playing thanks to Lech Poznán's 2-1 win against Groclin Grodzisk Wielkopolski.
Lech loss
Wisla would have had the chance to win the title themselves on Sunday had they avoided defeat against local rivals MKS Cracovia Kraków, but in the event Groclin – who started the day in second place – were unable to get the win they needed to keep the title race alive against Wielkopolska rivals Lech. Polish international Rafal Murawski gave the home side a second-minute lead and, despite the dismissal of Ivan Djurdjević for a second yellow card just past the half-hour, Tomasz Bandrowski made it 2-0 with five minutes to go, leaving Mariusz Muszalik's last-minute effort little consolation for the visitors. Groclin are now in fourth place, below Lech – who climb into second – and Legia Warszawa, 2-0 winners at MKS Odra Wodzisław Śląski.
Double chance
Those results left Wisla 14 points clear in the standings with only five matches to go, although their nearest challengers have only four games left. It is their first title in three seasons, and their fifth in eight seasons. The Krakow club are also still in contention for the league and cup double, with the first leg of their Polish Cup semi-final against Groclin coming up next week.
