Galatasaray AŞ were crowned Turkish Super League champions for the second time in three years thanks to a 2-0 home win against Gençlerbirliği Oftaşspor at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium.
Comfortable win
Galatasaray were three points clear of rivals Fenerbahçe SK going into the final round of matches and knew that a single point would be good enough to claim the title. Nine minutes before the interval the celebrations could begin as Hakan Şükür touched in Arda Turan's cross from the right wing and, just before the half-time whistle was blown, left-back Hakan Balta fired in a magnificent long-range strike to double Galatasaray's lead.
Fenerbahçe fall
As it transpired, the success was unnecessary as Fenerbahçe had to be satisfied with finishing second after losing 2-0 away to Trabzonspor thanks to goals from Ibrahima Yattara and Umut Bulut. Beşiktaş JK ended the campaign in third place, and won the right to represent Turkey in next season's UEFA Cup, following their 5-1 win over already-relegated Vestel Manisaspor. Mert Nobre, İbrahim Kaş (2) and Ali Tandoğan all scored in the opening ten minutes with Filip Holosko adding a late fifth.
History makers
Elsewhere, Sivasspor marked their highest finish in Super League history by completing the season in fourth after overcoming Gençlerbirliği SK 2-0 in Ankara through Sezer Badur and Musa Aydın efforts. Their campaign has ensured they have qualified for European competition for the first time in their history and they will take their place in the UEFA Intertoto Cup next season.
