Sampdoria general manager Giuseppe Marrotta added: "This is an incentive to build on the progress of a season which has just ended wonderfully for us." Mazzarri, who also said that any speculation about his future had been a "misunderstanding", took the helm last summer and guided Sampdoria into the UEFA Cup from the UEFA Intertoto Cup. They were knocked out in the first round. He had arrived from Reggina Calcio and a successful battle against relegation in which the southern team overcame the handicap of an eleven-point penalty.
