Aalborg BK have taken the title in Denmark with two games to spare after a 2-0 win at home against Brøndby IF left them with an unassailable eight-point lead over second-placed FC København.
Match point
Following successes in 1995 and 1999, 13,800 fans were thrilled to celebrate AaB's third title triumph on home soil. AaB missed their chance to take the title on Sunday when they lost 4-0 to reigning champions København in the Danish capital, but the North Jutland side made no mistake with their second match point, with two goals scored from corners at the end of the first half sealing victory against Brøndby.
Dawning realisation
Brøndby defender Max von Schlebrügge deflected a corner from the right into his own net after 41 minutes and, three minutes later, Kasper Risgård rose unchallenged to meet a delivery from the left to head AaB's second of the night. Ninth in the table, Brøndby had little to play for but helped contribute to an eventful but ultimately goalless second period. "It wasn't until ten minutes into the second half that I knew we would win the title," said AaB sporting director Lynge Jakobsen. As Danish champions, AaB will start their 2008/09 UEFA Champions League campaign in the second qualifying round.
