Mixed results
Giampaolo, 40, takes charge having been without a club since he was dismissed by Cagliari Calcio in December. A month earlier, the 48-year-old Beretta had been reinstalled as Siena coach, but his second spell at the helm of the Tuscan side produced mixed results – and his departure by mutual consent. The former Parma FC trainer's first stint had ended in similar fashion, after a long, if ultimately successful, relegation battle in 2006/07.
Cagliari experience
Appointed by Cagliari in the summer of 2005 after a strong campaign with Ascoli Calcio 1898, Giampaolo helped the Sardinian team avoid relegation in 2005/06 – despite the inconvenience of being first sacked then reappointed by club president Massimo Cellino.
