Prinz treble
Frankfurt had been competing with FCR 2001 Duisburg all season and after their 1-1 draw in the penultimate game, the European champions led by one point. Therefore a win in front of more than 4,500 fans today would ensure them a second straight title, their seventh in ten years, and Birgit Prinz struck on nine and 24 minutes to put Frankfurt in control. Kerstin Garefrekes added a third second later, and Sandra Smisek made it 4-0 on the half-hour. Stephanie Weichelt pulled one back, but after the break Prinz converted a penalty. Duisburg's 2-0 win at FC Bayern München was therefore in vain but Inka Grings's opening goal was her 26th league strike this season, making her top scorer ahead of Prinz on 25, and the runners-up will make their UEFA Women's Cup debut next season as Frankfurt enter as holders.
Coach bows out
Sunday's game was the last in charge for Frankfurt coach Hans-Jürgen Tritschoks after three league titles and two UEFA Women's Cups in four years, and he said: "We have achieved what nobody before expected the season. Due to serious injuries to Renate Lingor and Pia Wunderlich, the task was more difficult. We even had a small crisis with two defeats in a row, after many games without a break, but we brilliantly mastered that. A huge compliment to the team, at the decisive moment they always deliber. I have achieved my dreams as a coach. To win the German Cup, the UEFA Cup and the championship in the same season is the greatest." His replacement is set to be announced later this week.
