Marsaxlokk FC striker Kevin Sammut has been voted Malta's Player of the Season as his side prepare for action in the UEFA Cup next week.

'My dream'
The 28-year-old said: "It has always been my dream to win this award. Since I was a little kid I dreamt of being Malta's best footballer and playing for the national team." The Maltese international celebrated his achievement by signing a two-year extension to his contract at Marsaxlokk, keeping him at the club until 2012. Marsaxlokk finished second in Malta last season to qualify for the UEFA Cup, and pulled off a coup by persuading English coach Brian Talbot to stay on for another season. Sammut has been impressed with the summer transfer activity, saying: "With the new arrivals I believe that Marsaxlokk will be challenging for the honours next season."

Europe beckons
Malta international defender Brian Said tops the list of new arrivals, joining from Sliema Wanderers FC, while Christian Cassar has been signed from Floriana FC. Goalkeeper Saviour Darmanin has been lured from Valletta FC while Brazilian striker Marcelo Perreira has come from relegated Mqabba FC with Clive Brincat and Arnold Buttigieg joining from lower division clubs Saint George's FC and Saint Patrick FC respectively. However, champions Valletta have signed Marsaxlokk stars Cleavon Frendo and Jamie Pace. Marsaxlokk host Croatian side NK Slaven Koprivnica in their UEFA Cup first qualifying round opener next Thursday.
