FC Girondins de Bordeaux defeated Olympique Lyonnais 5-4 on penalties in the French Super Cup final to prevent the Ligue 1 champions from winning the trophy for the seventh successive year.

Cris woe
After a goalless 90 minutes, the match went straight to spot-kicks and despite Lyon's new goalkeeper Hugo Lloris saving twice, it was failures from Sidney Govou, Fabio Grosso and finally captain Cris that ensured Laurent Blanc's Bordeaux lifted their first Trophée des Champions. A traditional season curtain-raiser for the past 13 years, Lyon's maiden domestic double last term meant it was league runners-up Bordeaux who provided the opposition, and on their home ground, it was Les Marine et Blanc who showed they were up to the challenge as they dominated the first half.

Lloris display
Centre-back Henrique's close-range volley struck the crossbar after 18 minutes, while Lloris was Lyon's saviour on more than one occasion thereafter, in particular from Marouane Chamakh. Despite missing several regulars, including the late withdrawal of playmaker Juninho Pernambucano due to tendonitis, Lyon attempted to step up a gear after break but failed to fashion any chances of note and so the game drifted to penalties.

Penalty drama
Lloris' saves from Fernando Cavenaghi and his former OGC Nice team-mate David Bellion seemed to have swung the silverware in Lyon's favour but inbetween, his counterpart, Ulrich Ramé, first palmed out an effort from Govou before Grosso put his kick over the crossbar. Souleymane Diawara then converted his attempt to put the pressure on Cris, whose subsequent miss gave Bordeaux an early season boost ahead of their Ligue 1 opener against SM Caen next Saturday. Lyon host Toulouse FC the next day.
