Huub Stevens celebrated his first match in charge of PSV Eindhoven by lifting the Johan Cruijff Schaal thanks to a 2-0 defeat of Feyenoord.
Three defeats
In the traditional curtain-raiser to the Eredivisie season which starts next Friday, second-half headers from Danko Lazović and Dirk Marcellis earned PSV the Dutch Super Cup at the Amsterdam ArenA. League champions in the last four campaigns, PSV ended a three-year losing streak in this fixture, with all of their reverses having come against AFC Ajax.
Heading prowess
Feyenoord were missing several first-choice players through injury, including Jon Dahl Tomasson, Roy Makaay, Jonathan De Guzman, Ron Vlaar and Karim El Ahmadi, leaving coach Gertjan Verbeek to fill his substitutes' bench with squad members from the youth team. Even so, it took PSV – who had earlier struck the post – 55 minutes to open the scoring as Serbian international Lazović headed in a deflected left-wing cross from Mike Zonneveld. The lead was doubled 12 minutes later and again Zonneveld was the provider, with the defender's corner being nodded in by Marcellis. The closest cup winners Feyenoord came to reducing the deficit was when Denny Landzaat shot high over Andreas Isaksson's crossbar.
Stevens pleased
"I am happy with this, especially because I saw in the match certain things that we have worked on in recent weeks," said Stevens, who returned to PSV this summer having served the club as player and assistant coach between 1975 and 1993. "We were changing positions a lot in attack and that can make it difficult for other teams. We played pretty dominant football and that is what our intention is."
